In 1859-60, Burges took over the restoration of Waltham Abbey from Poynter, working with
Poynter's son Edward Poynter and with furniture makers Harland
and Fisher. From 1875, though he continued to work on the completion of
projects already begun, Burges acquired no additional major
commissions. This may occasionally have resulted from Alfred Burges's engineering firm,
Walker, Burges and Cooper, having undertaken work on the East Bute
Docks in Cardiff for the second Marquess. She was the daughter
of James Walker, who established the marine engineering firm of Walker and
Burges with Burges's father Alfred, and this family connection introduced
Burges the fee. In 1870, Burges was requested to draw up an iconographic scheme of inner decoration for St Paul's Cathedral, unfinished because the demise of Sir
Christopher Wren. Henry Clutton was the lead architect but
Burges, as assistant, contributed to the restoration of the sculpture and to the final decorative scheme.
